Civil servants lack dedication

ONE feels sorry for our prime minister, seeing him doing night inspections and interviewing poor souls sleeping on the five-foot paths.
No other country will allow their prime minister to waste precious time in this field.
Indeed, they will feel ashamed and guilty if their prime minister were to do the job of a night jaga (security guard).
However, in this country, it is the opposite. We see ministers dragging the prime minister to get a first-hand look at the street beggar situation, without realising that they are revealing their weakness to the public.
Malaysia used to have strong executives and dedicated officers in the early days. Any complaint from the public would be acted upon within two weeks.
Such promptness is rare these days.
The weakness of these officers and executives gives a bad impression to the government of the day.
The motto — People First, Performance Now — means nothing to the civil servants.
It is time for ministries to look at their portfolios, so that all
negative practices may be discontinued.
