'NKRA initiatives have been successful'

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Ayub Yaakob who was appointed National Key Results Area (NKRA) secretariat chairman yesterday said his main task was to make the public accept the fact that the crime index has reduced.

“We are on the right track. The NKRA initiatives have been successful but we still have to allay the fears of the public. The statistics alone are not important. The public must feel safe,” said Ayub after taking over the role of secretariat chairman from Datuk Abu Samah Mat at Bukit Aman. Abu Samah is now the CID deputy director (Investigation and Prosecution).

Ayub, the former Penang police chief, has been tasked to coordinate all units under the Royal Malaysian Police and other enforcement agencies for the NKRA initiatives in the fight against crime.
He said police and the other agencies will have to find ways to include the public to reduce crime.

“The walkabout and the high profile policing is one of the NKRA initiatives and we have intensified efforts to get closer to the community,” he said.

“We want to rope in the public so that we can achieve the success together. Then the public can have a sense of ownership in the fight against crime.”
