Allow contract staff to keep their jobs, govt urged

SEREMBAN: Cuepacs, the umbrella body for public-sector unions, yesterday urged the government to look into the plight of some 60,000 contract staff who stand to lose their source of income upon expiry of their contracts.

Its president, Omar Osman, said the fate of these workers was similar to that of 137 others with the State Tourism Action Council, whose contracts were recently terminated after having served for more than eight years.

"Department heads, who have contract workers, should find a solution to help this group of employees.

"This move will ensure that contract workers can continue to work and are not faced with sudden financial difficulties if their contracts are terminated," he said at a press conference here on Tuesday.

Omar, who was speaking at the launch of a seminar at the state Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) office, said the plight of the affected staff would be brought to the attention of the Public Service Department to seek a viable solution.

"I was made to understand that earlier, the State Tourism Action Council workers were to be given permanent posts. However, that did not materialise following a cabinet reshuffle and the appointment of new ministers."

He added that the excuses given by heads of department that there was insufficient budget and that contract workers did not perform up to mark were unacceptable.

On cooperation with the MACC, Osman said more joint programmes and activities would be organised to enhance integrity and also prevent corrupt practices among civil servants.
