Civil service to recruit "best brains"

PUTRAJAYA: Conditions for critical positions in the civil service will be revised to attract the best brains, the prime minister said.

Datuk Seri Najib Razak said he was committed to ensuring the civil service was made up of only the best Malaysians.

"I challenge the young generation of today which has been criticising the public sector to be with us to improve the system. Come on and join us for the sake of the nation," he said when addressing about 3,000 civil servants here.

Najib said the government realised it could not compete with the private sector in offering lucrative salaries. "But we offer you job satisfaction in serving the people and the country. We will revise and improve critical service schemes so that your contributions are appreciated."

Najib said understanding and cooperation between policy-makers and civil servants was vital. "Even the best policy cannot be implemented without an efficient mechanism."
He expressed confidence that the management system, based on shared recognition between ministers and government servants, would bring the civil service to a higher level of performance.

"Changes will not take place just like that but only with full commitment and teamwork from all of us.

"History proves you have succeeded in transforming Malaysia from an agricultural to a modern, industrialised nation, and among the 20 largest trading nations in the world," he told the civil servants.
